I am in the middle of preaching through 1 Corinthians. Actually, I’m a bit further than the middle since my next sermon will be from 1 Corinthians 11:1-16. If you recognize that text, you know it is about head coverings in the church. Fun times.
A book that has been indispensable to my studies is Bruce Winter’s Roman Wives, Roman Widows. I first became acquainted with Winters’ work during a class at Midwestern Theological Seminary in Kansas City, MO. We studied 1 Timothy 2:9- 15, and I found Roman Wives, Roman Widows an excellent resource.
So, if you want great background information about Roman culture and texts such as 1 Corinthians 11:2-16, 1 Timothy 2:9-15, 5:11-15, and Titus 2:3-5, you must pick up this book.
